Spring in England / My Future
Ah, yes, it's Spring in England. This means it's either windy, or raining, or both. It's been too damp for me to cut the lawn, and usually too wet for us to even do some weeding, though I did don my wet weather clothes and do a bit today.
My wife started a new job two weeks ago, having been made redundant a month ago. She's gone from working on her own as a solicitor's cashier (which she's done for about the last 10 years) to being one of a team of five in an open plan office housing about 200 people. She's still doing legal cashier work, but now more of a conveyor belt way of doing things. It's been a big culture shock, I think. And although she's supposed to work 8:30 to 5 a lot of other people there seem to work extra hours, but unpaid. She really doesn't want to get into that routine, but it's difficult when you're working in a team. Only time will tell if this job works out.
I should hear about my own fate within the next couple of weeks. There should be an announcement about which of the three bidders will be taking over our work, and which staff will be offered jobs under the new regime. Strangely, I'm quite calm about this. Maybe it's because I've had a long time to get used to the idea that whatever happens, it's going to mean a change of some kind. But the waiting has been a pain.
